Tri-Rail strictly enforces its fare policy.

Passengers must have an EASY Card loaded with the appropriate fare product, or a valid paper ticket, prior to boarding the train. Passes and tickets are available at all Tri-Rail stations and NOT sold onboard the train. Tri-Rail suggests arriving at the station 20 minutes prior to departure. Failure to present valid Tri-Rail fare on trains upon request, is a first-degree misdemeanor and may result in a fine from $50 to $1,000, arrest and/or removal from the train, FSS341.3025 or FSS812.015 (Tri-Rail policy prohibits refunds or replacement of lost or stolen tickets.) EASY Card holders should register their cards by calling 1-800-TRI-RAIL (874-7245) to receive the benefit of balance protection.

EASY Card holders with valid fare must ‘tap on’ a stand-alone validator, prior to boarding the train, to validate their fare product. Passengers should ‘tap off’ immediately after exiting the train, to ensure that the correct fare is deducted.

Calculating Your Fare

The Tri-Rail system is comprised of six zones. Weekday fare is determined by the number of zones through which a passenger travels. To determine the number of zones traveled, start at your origin station (which counts as zone one). Each shaded area counts as one additional zone. The total number of zones passed through (including the zone you arrived in) will determine the cost of your fare. When purchasing a fare product from a TVM, your fare is automatically calculated. The Zoned Fare chart outlines the available ticket types with corresponding prices by zone. A map with the fare zones is shown below.
