TRI-RAIL ANTICIPATES POSSIBLE DELAYS DUE TO TRACK WORK
Tri-Rail passengers may experience potential delays of up to 15 minutes beginning Tuesday, November 10
and continuing for approximately the next six weeks due to track work. Delays could occur Tuesday
through Friday as crews work to maintain the track for maximum safety and reliability. The work will
take place on approximately 62 miles of “Main Line 1,” as part of the ongoing maintenance program.
Work will be done during the late evening and early morning hours, when Tri-Rail trains do not operate.
It is possible that train speed restrictions, applied to sections of the track, could cause intermittent
delays during the day to some Tri-Rail trains. The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, CSX
Transportation and Florida Department of Transportation are working together to minimize the impact to
passengers. CSX Transportation is providing special track equipment expected to minimize the length of
time train speed restrictions are in effect.
There is also the possibility of some road closures during the length of construction. CSX Transportation
is working with the FDOT to reduce any inconvenience to drivers. Advance notification will be made prior
to closures occurring.
For additional information and updates, log onto www.tri-rail.com or
call 1-800-TRI-RAIL (874-7245).

SFRTA OPENING NEW PARKING LOT AT TRI-RAIL’S WEST PALM BEACH STATION, TUESDAY, AUGUST 18
Palm Beach County has completed a new parking lot adjacent to the west platform at Tri-Rail’s West
Palm Beach Station. The new parking lot provides 118 additional spaces for passengers and 45
designated spaces for South Florida Regional Transportation Authority/Tri-Rail and Palm Tran
employees. The parking lot also provides special spaces for scooters and motorcycles, along
with bicycle lockers which will be used as part of a new passenger program/amenity to be launched
in the near future. The new lot, accessible from Clearwater Avenue, will open to the public
on Tuesday, August 18.
“Parking has long been at a premium at Tri-Rail’s West Palm Beach Station, which is also utilized
by Amtrak and Greyhound patrons,” said Commissioner Jeff Koons, Palm Beach County Commission board
chairman and SFRTA Governing Board chair. “The opening of the new parking lot will definitely
enable us to better serve our passengers and greatly enhances the new West Palm Beach Intermodal
Center, overall.”
The lot was built at a cost of approximately $1 million with funding provided by the Federal
Transit Administration and the Florida Department of Transportation.

NO FUNDS MADE AVAILABLE TO SAVE TRI-RAIL
A STATEMENT FROM BROWARD COUNTY COMMISSIONER JOSEPHUS EGGELLETION, JR., CHAIR, SOUTH FLORIDA REGIONAL
TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY GOVERNING BOARD
“We have just learned that there are no additional funds to save Tri-Rail in the state of Florida’s FY10
budget. Clearly, this is a serious issue, which will create a hardship for the people of South Florida
who rely on the train for their livelihood and well-being. It will also have a devastating effect on
thousands of businesses that depend on the train to get their employees to work.
The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority is faced with two scenarios, at this time. In scenario
number one, Tri-Rail can operate for only 18 months as of October 5, 2009, based on the counties funding
Tri-Rail at the $1.565 million provided by legislation. This would mean a drastic reduction in Tri-Rail
service with only 30 trains per day and no weekend or holiday service. I have asked the Executive Director
to prepare a budget based on this scenario for the Friday, May 22, 2009 Governing Board Meeting.
In the second scenario, Tri-Rail can only operate for nine to 12 months as of October 5, 2009, with the
reduced schedule as mentioned above, if any one of the three counties elects to give zero dollars to the
SFRTA/Tri-Rail, which is a very real possibility.”

TRI-RAIL TO INCREASE FARES AS OF JUNE 1
The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority will raise all Tri-Rail fares by 25 percent
beginning on Monday, June 1, 2009. This marks the first fare increase for the commuter rail system
since 1995. The South Florida region’s other transportation providers, Broward County Transit,
Miami-Dade Transit and Palm Tran, have all increased their fares within the past year.
The Tri-Rail fare increase was necessary due to anticipated funding shortfalls at the state and
local levels, and because of the need to bring the percentage of operations costs, covered by
ticket revenue, more in-line with the national average of 25 percent. Tri-Rail currently recovers
approximately 18 percent of the operations budget through fares. Even with the price increase,
Tri-Rail’s fares continue to be among the lowest in the nation.
Effective June 1, the price of a monthly ticket will be $100, up from the current fare of $80.
Members of the Employer Discount Program will pay $75 for an EDP Monthly Ticket, up from the
current fare of $60. The price of a full-fare, Roundtrip Ticket to ride the entire length of
the system will be $11.55, up from the current fare of $9.25. Weekend fares, which entitle
passengers to ride all day for one flat fee, will be $5, up from the current fare of $4, with
the discounted weekend fare being $2.50, up from the current fare of $2.
Monthly tickets purchased in May for travel in June will be sold at the increased prices and
in accordance with the new fare structure. Half-price discounts are still in effect for students,
senior citizens 65 and older, persons with disabilities and Medicare card holders. For additional information,

TRI-RAIL ENHANCED WEEKDAY SCHEDULE TO GO INTO EFFECT MAY 4, 2009
Changes Will Provide For More Reliable Service
The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority will be implementing a new weekday Tri-Rail
schedule Monday, May 4, 2009. The enhanced schedule will provide for more reliable service through
better on-time performance. No changes to the weekend schedule are projected, at this time.
The SFRTA will continue to operate 50 trains on the weekdays. The new schedule will add approximately
10 minutes to the time it takes to travel Tri-Rail’s 72-mile service area along the South Florida
Rail Corridor, but will create a more consistent travel experience for passengers. Additionally,
the enhanced schedule maintains most 20 and 30-minute headways during peak travel times.
The schedule, for the most part, does away with the fast, 15-minute turns at the northernmost end
of Tri-Rail’s service area at the Mangonia Park Station and at the southernmost end at the Miami
Airport Station. The tightness of the turns from trains operating in one direction to another has
caused cascading delays if trains are late. The SFRTA has been working with the fixed-route bus
providers in all three counties to minimize missed connectivity between trains, buses and Metrorail.
The schedule also introduces a new “L-stop” policy to encourage faster arrivals at the final
destinations at both ends of the corridor in the early morning and late evening. Northbound
trains P600 and P602 in the morning and P646 and P648 in the evening may depart the Boynton Beach,
Lake Worth and West Palm Beach stations as much as five minutes early. The same policy applies to
southbound trains P601 and P603 in the morning and P647 and P649 in the evening at the Opa-locka,
Metrorail Transfer and Hialeah Market stations.
While there will be no schedule changes made to the weekend schedule, the SFRTA’s operations team
will be adding a second locomotive on each train set to provide back-up power in the case of an
equipment issue. This change should enhance weekend on-time performance, as well.

SFRTA LAUNCHES “FUND OR FAIL” GRASSROOTS OUTREACH EFFORT TO SAVE TRI-RAIL
Public Encouraged to Stand Up and Be Counted In Order To Maintain Train Service
The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority is mounting a major grassroots effort to bring
the financial plight of the Tri-Rail commuter rail service to the attention of Governor Crist and
State Senators and Representatives. The “Fund or Fail” campaign is being organized to inform members
of the public of the impact the impending revenue shortfalls will have on service and to encourage
them to contact the Governor and their elected representatives in the House and Senate with the
message that Tri-Rail service is critical to the livelihood and welfare of the people of South
Florida and it must be saved.
“The need to let our elected officials in Tallahassee hear our voices is greater now than ever
before. Due to revenue shortfalls at the local level, the counties simply cannot afford to
continue to fund Tri-Rail as they have in previous years. Passing legislation to provide Tri-Rail
with a new dedicated revenue stream is the only way to ensure that commuter rail service in South
Florida , as we know it, will survive,” said SFRTA Executive Director Joe Giulietti.
If dedicated funding legislation does not pass in the Legislature, service reductions will take
place on or about October 5, 2009. SFRTA would be forced to cut back Tri-Rail service to possibly
as few as 30 trains each weekday, down from the current level of 50. Service on the weekends and
holidays would be eliminated.
The easiest way for the public to assist in this effort is to log onto www.tri-rail.com/FundOrFail and
click on the “Fund or Fail” banner. Respondents will be given the option of signing a petition
supporting dedicated funding or of sending either the pre-written or a personalized message to
the Governor, State Senators and Representatives.

SFRTA ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO TRI-RAIL SCHEDULE TO PROVIDE BETTER SERVICE FOR PASSENGERS
The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority will be implementing a new weekday Tri-Rail
schedule to provide for more reliable service through better on-time performance. The implementation
date for the new schedule is still to be determined. No changes to the weekend schedule are projected,
at this time.
The SFRTA will continue to operate 50 trains on the weekdays. The new schedule will add approximately
10 minutes to the time it takes to travel Tri-Rail’s 72-mile service area along the South Florida Rail
Corridor, but will create a more reliable travel experience for passengers. Additionally, the enhanced
schedule maintains most 20 and 30-minute headways during peak travel times.
The schedule, for the most part, does away with the fast, 15-minute turns at the northernmost end of
Tri-Rail’s service area at the Mangonia Park Station and at the southernmost end at the Miami Airport
Station. The tightness of the turns from trains operating in one direction to another has caused
cascading delays if trains are late. The SFRTA has been working with the three county fixed route
bus providers to minimize missed connectivity between trains, buses and Metrorail.
While there will be no schedule changes made to the weekend schedule, the SFRTA’s operations team
will be looking into adding a second locomotive on each train set to provide back-up power in the
case of an equipment problem. This change should compliment weekend on-time performance, as well.
