SFRTA IMPLEMENTS NEW BUS TRANSFER PROCEDURE FEBRUARY 1

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) is implementing a new bus transfer procedure for Tri-Rail passengers transferring to BCT and Palm Tran buses as of February 1, 2012. As of that date, customers can visit a ticket vending machine (TVM) to receive a Transfer-to-Bus Ticket. This new feature will benefit all EASY Card users. Previously, 12-Trip and cash value users had to pay full fare when making bus connections because the buses are not presently equipped to read EASY Cards.

To get the Transfer-to-Bus Ticket, passengers must tap on the validator prior to boarding Tri-Rail and then tap off after exiting the train. This includes monthly pass holders. Once tapped off correctly, passengers must tap on the TVM and select Reload/Transfer-to-Bus from the menu screen and then select either BCT or Palm Tran. The Transfer-to-Bus Ticket will print automatically and will be dispensed in the tray at the bottom of the TVM. There is no additional cost to obtain the transfer ticket.

Passengers should show the ticket to the bus operator to obtain their transfer discount. The bus operator will collect the ticket from the passenger. EASY Card passengers who do not have the Transfer-to-Bus Ticket will pay full fare. Receipts will no longer be accepted for transfer discounts. The Transfer-to-Bus Ticket is only valid for a discount when transferring from Tri-Rail to a bus that serves a Tri-Rail station.

TRI-RAIL POSTS STRONG RIDERSHIP INCREASES IN 2011

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) announced today that total ridership, including weekends and holidays, reached 3,948,100, up from 3,644,978 in 2010, showing an increase of 8.3%. Last year’s total marked the second highest ridership in the 22-year history of the system, surpassed only by 2008, when gas prices consistently hovered around $4 a gallon. Weekday ridership on Tri-Rail trains increased by 10% in 2011, growing from 3,117,556 passengers in 2010, to 3,424,030 in 2011.

“Now that more South Floridians are returning to work, more and more commuters are turning to Tri-Rail to provide an economical, efficient way to get to their place of employment. We are glad that we are here to fulfill their needs,” said Joseph Giulietti, SFRTA Executive Director.

Underscoring the impact that the improving employment outlook is having on Tri-Rail ridership, is that 285 companies joined the SFRTA’s Employer Discount Program (EDP) in 2011, as did 2,829 individual employees.

The key to using Tri-Rail is the connectivity to feeder systems. In 2011, use of Tri-Rail-sponsored shuttles increased by 64%, with a total of 783,947 passengers, as compared to 479,155 in 2010. Ridership numbers were bolstered by the addition of new shuttle routes in Opa-locka , Lake Worth and Fort Lauderdale, as well as the rerouting of some existing shuttles to make them accessible to more employment centers.

SFRTA TO OFFER FREE BICYCLE LOCKERS AT STATIONS

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) will begin offering free bicycle lockers to Tri-Rail passengers as of January 1, 2012. This decision was made to mitigate overcrowding on some trains. Passengers will only have to pay a $20 refundable security deposit per locker.

Anyone who currently has a lease for a locker with the SFRTA will receive a refund on the balance remaining. There are lockers at all stations except Pompano Beach, which is scheduled to undergo reconstruction beginning next summer.

“With the price of gas, not only is our ridership up, but also the number of bicycles on the trains has increased significantly. It is our hope that, by making the bicycle lockers free, it will encourage people to leave their bicycles at a station before they board the train,” said Joseph Giulietti, SFRTA Executive Director.

Bicycle lockers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. To obtain a bicycle locker, log onto www.tri-rail.com or call 1-800-TRI-RAIL (874-7245.) “South Florida’s Kids Got Talent” is free and open to the public. For more information, please call 1-800-TRI-Rail.

TRANSPORTATION SECRETARY LAHOOD ANNOUNCES $5.7 MILLION GRANT FOR SFRTA.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced that the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) will receive $5.7 million through the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) TIGGER III (Transit Investment in Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction) Grant Program. The funds will be used to construct Tri-Rail’s first green, LEED certified, sustainable station at Pompano Beach. The SFRTA project was one of 46 nationwide selected to receive grants.

“These grants will put thousands of Americans back to work building sustainable, energy efficient transit vehicles and facilities across the country,” said Secretary LaHood. “The Obama Administration is committed to investing in the cutting-edge transportation projects that will keep our economy moving forward.” The FTA reviewed 266 project applications representing more than $1 billion in funding requests from transit providers across the country. The awards to the projects selected totaled over $100 million.

“We are grateful to the FTA for providing the funds to go forward with this very important project. It is a win-win for South Florida. A win for the environment and a win for the economy due to the construction jobs it will create,” said SFRTA Chair, Commissioner Kristin Jacobs.

The rebuilt Pompano Beach Station will generate more than 100 percent of the station’s energy demand through solar panels. The project will send the excess energy to the power grid and store daytime energy for nighttime lighting of the station, parking area, and other parts of the facility.

Implementation of this demonstration project will result in a significant reduction in energy consumption, which is consistent with the FTA’s livability and environmental sustainability goals to support green building. Tri-Rail’s Pompano Beach Station will be the first transit station in the State of Florida and may be one of the first nationally to be 100 percent supported by solar energy, and will become SFRTA’s green station prototype for future improvements at all Tri-Rail stations.

NEW TRANSIT CONNECTION AREA MAPS MAKE GETTING AROUND REGION EASIER.

A new feature has been added to Tri-Rail’s website, Transit Connection Area Maps, which show destinations and attractions that are in the general vicinity of all train stations, including how to access them via transfers to county and city buses, Metrorail, or free SFRTA shuttles.

“One of the most common questions our customer service representatives hear is, ‘What do I do when I get off the train, where can I go?” said Bonnie Arnold, SFRTA Director of Marketing and Customer Service. “These new maps clearly answer that question.”

With the transit-user in mind, the maps show points of interests such as government offices, universities, libraries, performing arts centers, local attractions, hospitals, shopping centers, and much more. The maps can be accessed by going to www.tri-rail.com > Rider Information > System Map, Station and Shuttle Information, and click on the station from which you are either departing or arriving. Each station has its own Transit Connection Area Map, which shows the various bus routes that serve that particular station. All routes are color-coded for easy visibility.

The maps are also posted at all Tri-Rail stations for the convenience of passengers who do not have access to the website. For additional information, call the SFRTA Customer Service at 1-800-TRI-RAIL (874-7245).

SFRTA Wins National Procurement and Marketing Awards

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) has once again won national recognition for its procurement and marketing initiatives. The Procurement Department was notified that it received the Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award from the National Purchasing Institute. The Authority received two first place AdWheel Awards in the American Public Transportation Association’s (APTA) annual competition to recognize excellence in marketing efforts by transit systems across the nation.

“The Procurement and Marketing Departments, along with other departments at the Authority, continue to receive national recognition for their professionalism and the quality of the work. They take great pride in their work and it is gratifying to see that it is rewarded with prestigious honors such as these,” said Joe Giulietti, SFRTA Executive Director.

The achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award is designed to recognize organizational excellence in procurement. The award is achieved by those organizations who receive a high score on a rating of standardized criteria. The program is designed to measure innovation, professionalism, e-procurement, productivity and leadership attributes of the procurement function.

The SFRTA is one of only 21 government agencies in Florida and one of only 26 special districts in the United States to receive the award. This is the fourth time that the SFRTA has received this honor.

Tri-Rail’s “Senior Idol” has become one of the Authority’s signature events and it took first place in APTA’s special event category this year, which honors marketing efforts specifically tailored to promote public awareness about transit. The event draws hundreds of seniors each year to compete for the title of best singer over the age of 65. The final phase of the competition consists of a performance by 12 finalists before a sold-out audience at Fort Lauderdale’s Parker Playhouse.

The second AdWheel Award was in the print media category. The poster created for the “Cleared for Take-off” Campaign took first place. The campaign promoted Tri-Rail as the convenient, economical way to reach South Florida’s three international airports. Both winning entries were created by Bitner Goodman, which has been the Authority’s agency of record for more than a decade.

Kristin Jacobs Commissioner Jacobs was elected to represent District 2 on the Broward County Commission in 1998. One of her top priorities involves being a top advocate for protecting the quality of life of the visitors and residents of Broward County; believing that the welfare of our community is dependent on a healthy environment. While “going green” is a popular practice now, it was several years ago that she championed the NatureScape Broward and Water Matters initiatives.

Her preservation efforts have earned her the James D. Webb Public Service Award from the Everglades Coalition, as well as recognition from the Florida Environmental Resource Agency, the Southeast Society of Environmental Engineers and the Broward County Audubon Society.

She has always been an ardent supporter of mass transit as a means of easing traffic congestion and pollution in Broward County. She was instrumental in obtaining Broward cities’ support through the dedication of gas funds to establish this service. In 2005, she presented a successful resolution to the Board of County Commissioners opposing the Florida Department of Transportation’s increase in HOV lane travel restrictions by four hours a day.

Commissioner Abrams has been serving on the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners representing District 4 since 2009 and was elected in 2010 without opposition to a full four-year term. He has a lengthy record of public service. A former Mayor of Boca Raton, he was elected in 2001, re-elected in 2003 without opposition, and again in 2005, this time with the most votes in city history. He was named Mayor Emeritus when he stepped down in 2008 due to term limits.

The Commissioner also served five terms as a City Council member in Boca Raton and was a member of the city’s Planning and Zoning Board. He is a past president of the League of Cities and a founding member of the Florida League of Mayors.

As mayor, Abrams gained national exposure and local respect during the first bioterrorist attack in American history when anthrax was discovered at the AMI building in Boca Raton in 2001. He received the Distinguished Service Medal from the Israel National Police for his leadership during the ordeal.

Commissioner Abrams attended Harvard and received his law degree from George Washington University. Active in the community, he chairs the county’s Value Adjustment Board and the Broadband Committee. He serves as vice chair of the Solid Waste Authority and sits on the boards of the Children’s Services Council, Florida Association of Counties and the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts.

Tri-Rail Breaks All Previous Ridership Records On Dump The Pump Day 2011

Tri-Rail carried more passengers yesterday, on National Dump the Pump Day 2011, than on any other day in its 22-year history. A record 19,731 trips were logged, breaking the previous record set on the day of the Miami Heat victory parade in 2006, by more than 1,000.

“The overwhelming turnout yesterday is a strong indicator that people are willing to explore new options for getting around the region,” said Bonnie Arnold, Director of Marketing and Customer Service for the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, which operates Tri-Rail. “It was especially encouraging to see so many young people on the trains, because the earlier in life that they discover there are alternatives to driving, the more likely they are to use them.”

Dump the Pump Day was created by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) six years ago as a means to encourage people to leave their vehicles at home for a day and use public transportation for their commute instead. As gas prices have climbed, it has become increasingly more successful each year. This year, more than 107 systems from across the country participated in the effort.

SFRTA Marks Annual Dump the Pump Day with Free Rides on Tri-Rail

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) is celebrating the 6th Annual “Dump the Pump” Day by offering free rides on Tri-Rail on Thursday, June 16th, to anyone who wants to take the train. “Dump the Pump” Day was created by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) to encourage people to beat the high cost of gas by leaving their car at home and taking a train, bus, or trolley, instead. Last year, more than 120 transit systems nationwide participated in the effort.

“We realize that people are having a difficult time just getting to their jobs with the price of gas, let alone traveling for any leisure activities,” said SFRTA Executive Director Joe Giulietti. “By offering free rides on Tri-Rail on ‘Dump the Pump’ Day, we are encouraging people to discover that there are alternatives to the expense of driving to get around the region.”

In addition to free rides, there will be activities at various Tri-Rail stations throughout the day. Several radio stations will be broadcasting live from train stations and members of the SFRTA staff will be present to talk to passengers about the benefits of public transportation, and Tri-Rail in particular.

Statistics have shown that transportation is the second highest strain on a family’s budget, only slightly less than lodging. If one family member opts to commute on public transportation and the household can give up one car, the savings can be as much as $9,000 a year in South Florida.

SFRTA OPENS NEW PARKING LOT AT CYPRESS CREEK STATION

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) is opening its newest parking facility at the Cypress Creek Station on Wednesday, November 17, 2010. The lot, adjacent to the station’s west platform has 345 spaces with a bus lane and a 235 foot pedestrian canopy leading to the station.

The project included paving, drainage, new LED lighting, 16-foot wide canopy structures, landscaping and irrigation. In addition to the bus lane, there are designated areas for taxis and for cars dropping off passengers. The SFRTA’s partner organization, the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization, recently relocated to an office complex adjacent to the station’s east platform.

“This will be of tremendous benefit to our passengers who drive to the station to catch the train. No longer will they have to park in the lot on the east side of Andrews Avenue and cross six very busy lanes of traffic to catch their train,” said Joe Giulietti, SFRTA Executive Director.

The SFRTA’s free shuttle buses will now load from the west parking lot. BCT buses will continue to pick up passengers in the Park & Ride lot on the east side of Andrews Avenue.

Local Woman Addresses Members Of Congress About Need To Support Public Transportation

The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) has invited Broward County resident Deanna Droira-Garcia to speak to members of Congress about the importance of funding for public transportation. Ms. Droira-Garcia was the winner of the Florida Public Transportation Association's "Tell Our Story" contest, a statewide initiative supporting APTA's national "Telling Our Story" effort.

Due to a medical condition, Ms. Droira-Garcia was forced to give up driving. An account supervisor with Radio Disney, she had clients throughout the tri-county area. Using Tri-Rail, Broward County Transit, Miami-Dade Transit, and Palm Tran, she was not only able to make and keep appointments, but she became one of Radio Disney's top salespeople in the area.

APTA learned of her story and invited her to speak at a "Telling Our Story" rally in Washington, D.C. on September 22 at 11 a.m. Among the officials expected to attend are Representative Jim Oberstar, chair of the House's Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. The rally will be held at the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Federal Center, SE Train Station.

APTA's year-long "Telling Our Story" effort was created to inform elected officials in Washington about the importance of passing a long-range bill to fund public transportation. In his Labor Day speech in Milwaukee, President Obama spoke about the importance of funding transportation infrastructure, including public transportation and high-speed rail as a means of creating jobs. Studies have shown that for every $1 billion spent on transportation infrastructure, 36,000 jobs are created and supported.

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Bruno Barreiro Elected Chair
Of SFRTA’S Governing Board

Broward County Commissioner Kristin Jacobs Elected Vice Chair

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Bruno A. Barreiro was elected chair of the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority Governing Board at the June meeting. At the same meeting, Broward County Commissioner Kristin Jacobs was elected vice chair of the SFRTA Governing Board. Both terms begin on July 1, 2010 and last for one year.

This is Commissioner Barreiro’s fourth time serving as chair of the SFRTA Governing Board. First elected to serve on the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners in 1998, he represents District 5 and serves constituents in parts of Miami, Miami Beach, Little Havana, Downtown Miami and South Beach.

Commissioner Barreiro has long been a proponent of public transportation. In 1999, he sponsored a resolution for the creation of the Golden Passport to provide free transportation for senior citizens in Miami-Dade County. In 2002, he chaired the Transportation, Infrastructure and Environment Committee and sponsored resolution for a half-cent sales tax to improve mass transit services as outlined in the People’s Transportation Plan.

As commissioner, he has served as chairman of the Board of County Commissioners, chairman of the Miami-Dade County General Obligation Bond Committee and the Office of Public Transportation Management Subcommittee, and as chairman and vice chairman of the Internal Management and Fiscal Responsibility Committee.

GET YOUR BICYCLE LOCKER TODAY!

36 Locker Spaces Now Available At Tri-Rail’s West Palm Beach Station

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority launched their first-ever Bicycle Locker Program at Tri-Rail’s West Palm Beach Station on June 14. There are 18 perforated-sheet, steel lockers that are now available at the station, designed to accommodate two bicycles per modular unit, with a diagonal divider and separate door entries on either end (providing 36 individual spaces available for use).

The program will be phased in at all other Tri-Rail stations within the next several months (due to ongoing construction projects, lockers will be installed at a later date for the Pompano Beach Station, Cypress Creek Station, Fort Lauderdale / Hollywood International Airport Station at Dania Beach Station and Miami Airport Station). Once the project is completed, there will be bicycle lockers available at all of Tri-Rail’s 18 train stations. The fourth largest bicycle program launched by a public transportation agency within the United States, the SFRTA/Tri-Rail will be offering approximately 600 lockers for bicycle and bicycle accessory storage.

Registration fees for one locker are $37 for six months and $64 for a year. Users may also register for a second locker for half the price, should they want to store a bicycle at both their origin and destination station. There is also a refundable $30 security deposit to cover the price of one lock and two keys.

“More and more commuters are turning to bicycles for their commute to and from our train stations,” said SFRTA Executive Director Joseph Giulietti. “It’s a healthy, economical and environmentally responsible choice, and one that we want to support however we can.”

Bicycles have become more popular as a means of getting to or from Tri-Rail stations due to the high cost of gas and a growing concern for the environment. The installation of bicycle lockers at many Tri-Rail stations will provide commuters with a safe place to store their bicycles and will free up additional space onboard the train for passengers and luggage.

Click here to submit your Application and Agreement and reserve your spot today! You can also visit the West Palm Beach Station Ticket Kiosk for an Application and Agreement. The website will be updated accordingly, as lockers become available at additional stations. For additional information, please call Customer Service at 1-800-TRI-RAIL (874-7245).

FIFTH ANNUAL NATIONAL DUMP THE PUMP DAY
TO BE HELD ON JUNE 17

Dump the Pump. Save Money. Ride Transit.

With the economic recession and high gas prices still in effect, the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority announced today that it will join with more than 100 other public transportation systems nationwide to participate in the Fifth Annual National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 17. The slogan of this year’s National Dump the Pump Day is, “Dump the Pump. Save Money. Ride Transit.”

Helping commuters to save money, the SFRTA/Tri-Rail will be offering people the chance to win a Tri-Rail Monthly Ticket. Upon mailing in their name, address and telephone contact number, five people will be selected at random to receive a free ticket for the month of August. For more information on the ticket giveaway and requirements, people can visit www.tri-rail.com.

Members of the SFRTA staff will also be out riding Tri-Rail trains in the afternoon and will hold a Meet and Greet at Tri-Rail’s Boca Raton Station from 4 to 6 p.m. Joining them will be representatives from McDonald’s, one of Tri-Rail’s “Rail Reward” partners, and Sunny 104.3 WEAT-FM team members, as they broadcast from the train station with plenty of giveaways and prizes for Tri-Rail riders.

A videographer will also be on-hand to interview passengers and capture their stories about what public transportation means to them and what impact it has on their lives. These stories will be catalogued along with others gathered from across the country and delivered to legislators in Washington, D.C. in September to underscore the importance of funding for transit systems.

Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association, the 2010 National Dump the Pump Day encourages people to ride public transportation and save money, instead of driving a car. Started in June 2006 when gas prices were $3 per gallon, this national day emphasizes that public transportation is a great travel option that also helps people save money, while also protecting the environment.

In this economic climate, saving money is on everyone’s minds and public transportation is the quickest way to beat gas prices. According to the latest APTA Transit Savings Report, individuals in a two-person-household can save an average of more than $9,000 annually by downsizing to one car.

GOVERNOR CRIST DECLARES APRIL 18-24 TRAIN SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK

Florida Governor Charlie Crist has once again declared the third week in April “Train Safety Awareness Week.” Set for April 18 through 24, volunteers from the railroad industry, as well as law-enforcement personnel and emergency responders, will stage an information blitz to educate the public about the laws and rules governing activity around train tracks and grade crossings.

The recent statistics surrounding highway/rail grade crossing incidents are grim and chilling; in 2009, there were 48 incidents in Florida, resulting in 10 fatalities and 19 injuries. In addition, there were 27 trespass incidents, with 19 fatalities and 8 injuries. Approximately every two hours, either a vehicle, pedestrian, trespasser or some form of debris is struck by a train in the United States.

During the week-long “blitz,” law-enforcement personnel will be positioned at various grade crossings, where they will be issuing warnings and citations to drivers and pedestrians who do not adhere to the laws relating to trains and railroad tracks. An additional effort this year will be focused on trespasser prevention, especially between Tri-Rail’s West Palm Beach and Mangonia Park stations, along the South Florida Rail Corridor, where trespasser fatalities have been numerous.

Operation Lifesaver and the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority are partnering in TSAW, along with Amtrak, Bombardier, CSX Transportation, the Federal Transit Administration, the Florida Department of Transportation, Veolia and Wackenhut Corporation, as well as various law-enforcement agencies and first-responder teams throughout the tri-county area.

SFRTA POST-HOLIDAY “FOOD TRAIN” COLLECTS OVER 3,200 POUNDS OF FOOD

“Phantom of the Opera” cast members D.C. Anderson (black hat) and Bruce Winant (brown jacket), who play the managers of the Paris Opera House, sign autographs for an enthusiastic audience.

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) collected 3,286 pounds of food from Tri-Rail passengers as part of its “Food Train” effort to benefit the not-for-profit organization, Feeding South Florida. Formerly known as the Daily Bread Food Bank, and now part of the national program called Feeding America, the program distributes food and other essentials to 800 non-profit organizations in the region. The collection took place Tuesday, January 12, 2010 with a kick-off at the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport Station At Dania Beach and was followed up with collections at all Tri-Rail stations during the morning rush hour on January 14, 2010.

“All of us at Feeding South Florida are so grateful for the food drive that Tri-Rail has held here today,” said Anthea Pennant, Director of Development for Feeding South Florida. “It is important that the community understands that public transportation is not just about moving people, but it’s about supporting the community and helping the community.“

Tri-Rail mascot Conductor George Green thanks four “Phantom” fans for making their contribution to the “Food Train.”

Feeding South Florida’s mission is to provide food and other grocery products to communities, while educating and engaging communities to fight hunger and poverty. Their mission to improve lives is carried out with compassion, integrity, stewardship of resources and dedication, while they also empower other South Florida not-for-profit organizations to join forces and make a difference.

“We are grateful not only to our passengers for their incredible generosity during these difficult times, but also to the members of the SFRTA staff who volunteered their time and to our contractors, all of whom contributed to the success of this important effort,” said Joseph Giulietti, SFRTA Executive Director. Among the contractors who volunteered their assistance were Bombardier, Veolia, Wackenhut, Meridian, and Bitner Goodman. An additional partner was Broadway Across America, which provided vouchers for $20 tickets to “Phantom of the Opera” to anyone who made a contribution at the January 12 kick-off collection.

Collected items ranged from cases of canned tuna, fruits, and vegetables; to box-after-box of cereal and crackers, to jar-after-jar of peanut butter, and to even a 25-pound bag of dog food.

Statement from Commissioner Jeff Koons on Passage of Rail Bill Chair, South Florida Regional Transportation Authority

I want to thank everyone who has worked diligently to bring this bill to fruition. Passage of this legislation would not have been possible without the support of the leadership in the House and the Senate, especially that of Senate President Jeff Atwater. Our gratitude also goes out to our three county commissions, our partners around the state, and the SFRTA Governing Board. This bill benefits the thousands of riders who depend on Tri-Rail, the 320 employees who keep the system running each and every day, and the people of Tampa, Orlando and Jacksonville, who are that much closer to making passenger rail a reality in their communities.

BROWARD COUNTY COMMISSION APPOINTS KRISTIN JACOBS TO SFRTA GOVERNING BOARD

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners has appointed Commissioner Kristin Jacobs to the Governing Board for the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, effective October 6, 2009. Commissioner Jacobs replaces former commissioner Josephus Eggelletion.

Commissioner Jacobs was elected to represent the people of District 2 on the County Commission in 1998. During her tenure on the County Commission, she served as Broward County mayor in 2005 and as vice-mayor in 2004.

Her first priority continues to be her work as an outspoken advocate for protecting Broward’s quality of life. Whether fighting for a common sense approach to growth-management planning, protecting our environment, securing fair wages for workers, creating attainable housing or creating a public transportation system that moves people, not cars, it is Broward County’s homes, families and neighborhoods she is working to sustain.

She has always been an ardent supporter of mass transportation as a means to ease traffic congestion in Broward County. She spearheaded the Community Bus Transportation Network, which connects neighborhoods to Broward County Mass Transit in more than 20 cities and was instrumental in obtaining support through the dedication of gas tax funds to establish this service. In 2005, Commissioner Jacobs presented a successful resolution to the Board of County Commissioners opposing the Florida Department of Transportation’s increase in high-occupancy vehicle lane travel restrictions by four hours a day.

Commissioner Jacobs believes that the welfare of our community is dependent on a healthy environment. While “going green” is a popular practice now, it was several years ago that she championed the NatureScape Broward and Water Matters initiatives. Each volunteer program promotes water conservation, wildlife habitat creation and pollution prevention through the use of Florida-friendly landscape practices. Her preservation efforts have earned her the James D. Webb Public Service Award from the Everglades Coalition for her outstanding contribution to the protection of the Everglades ecosystem. Commissioner Jacobs’ environmental leadership has also been recognized by the Florida Environmental Resource Agency, the Southeast Society of Environmental Engineers and the Broward County Audubon Society.

Commissioner Jacobs lives with her husband Stuart and their three children, Rick, Lauren and Mitchell in Pompano Beach.
